New seaplane route from Glasgow to Oban—A breath of fresh air!

28th August 2007

If you are one of those who have family on the West Coast and travel to Oban or the Western Isles
frequently this new service is for you!

Or if you wish to start your holiday with something a little different, then why not fly to Glasgow using one of the low-cost airlines, take a taxi down to the pontoon at Glasgow Science Centre and get on to a luxury Cessna? Sit back in cream leather seats, enjoy the air conditioned cabin and the stunning views, including Loch Lomond, the Trossachs, Rothesay, Loch Fyne, Lochgilphead and Crinan before touching down in Oban Marina just half an hour later.

A trip that once meant a rail journey of over five hours from London to Glasgow, rush across Glasgow to get from Glasgow Central to Glasgow Queen Street rail Station—then a wait of hours at Queen Street for one of only three trains to Oban. The incredibly slow Oban train winds around the crags of Loch Lomond-side on to Crianlarich, to sit while the carriages are split into two trains—one going off to the right to Fort William—the other on to Oban—finally reaching Oban almost three hours later.

For those with time on their side, the train offers fantastic views. It is more environmentally friendly
(although still running diesel engines) and cheaper for the Scotland leg of the journey! London to
Glasgow return prices are expensive. When comparing price and journey time—the low-cost airlines win every time! The overall journey time from London—over eight hours of travelling (without the associated waiting at stations for connections). It takes a full day to recover from the exertion caused by the journey.

Leaving the house at 06:00hrs, one can get from Bedford to Glasgow in little over 3 hours (including the wait in the air-lounge), take the bus down from Glasgow Airport to Queens Street Rail Terminal within half an hour. Regrettably, you then have to wait for around 3 hours at the rail terminal before the Oban train leaves Glasgow. It is for this reason alone that the new Seaplane alternative comes an equal alternative to renting a car at Glasgow Airport. The Seaplane service flys at 10:15hrs Mon- Thus with 10:15 & 12:45 Fri-Sun. With both alternatives the entire journey can be completed in little over 5 hours—door-to-door! “Pay your money—take your choice”! Well done David West and his team!
